After the formation of the first gangs, in the winter of 1943, better-structured departments were formed in the mountain areas, based mainly on detachments of 40-50 men; 4-5 detachments formed a brigade, organizing 250-300 partisans. The brigades were of various types: the first to be formed are the “Garibaldi” brigades (communist), the “Justice and Freedom” brigades (of the Action Party) and the “Matteotti” brigades (socialist). In these brigades, a political commissar operated alongside the commander. Catholics set up their own brigades, such as the “Green Flames” or the “Italy”, or operate in autonomous formations, generally promoted by officers of the disbanded Italian Army.
